ShowtimeJoined TRG: 2006 What do you do outside of roller derby: Law Enforcement Communications. Karate (Upkudo) Instructor. Athletic or Skating Background: Originally a couch potato who got active, from long distance cycling, kayaking, hiking and fencing to a few other varied interest (skydiving's in there somewhere...) Why I joined derby: The story is a short but funny one... I blame my mother (who lives in Ohio). Back in the day she decided to get a Myspace page. She kept asking me to get one so we could stay in touch more. I acquiesced. After some time of non-activity I decided to look around and see who else was on the "Myspace thing". Geographic search and I saw an interesting picture that looked like a painting style I liked. Clicked on the picture. Saw a TRG logo and did the "THERE'S ROLLER DERBY IN TALLAHASSEE...????" head bob... Clicked on the TRG Myspace page.... Fast forward till the league sends out a call for volunteers... Now at this point I didn't think about the "flat track" part of the sport. When said call came out I thought to myself..."self, how can swing a hammer, turn a wrench and are pretty strong (not pretty but strong). I could help them put the track together or something. Now at this time I "friended" various members of the league. I messaged one of the skaters "Blast Femur" with a note saying i'd be glad to help out. (leaving my email address only as a point of contact). Now the fun part... I'm sitting at work (with a trainee I might add) and the phone rings... The voice said with a lilt..."Hi Will, so a little birdie told me you wanted to get involved with the roller girls". Now to get the image.. i'm looking around at this point because I had told no one at this point. So as i'm talking i'm looking for Allen Funt of Candid Camera fame to jump out and say "Smile, your on candid camera". So Kelly (the lilting voice tells me that they want me to be their announcer. (she likes my voice). I protest saying I have no knowledge of sports or sports broadcasting. She convinced me to commit to 1 bout. After that I was hooked. If you want more of the story just ask... I like to talk... Best Derby Moment: Too many to list. In general the progression of the league from a ragtag group to the a fully functioning, business oriented, WFTDA official membered Roller Derby powerhouse that is TRG. Favorite Opponent: As an announcer it is my job to remain neutral on the mic... However some of the funnest bouts have been against Ft Myers, Tampa and Panama City. Favorite derby fan: Superfan Phil from Texas. The man travels the country for roller derby bouts. Locally 2 favorites The Ginese (Great wall of Gina's family) and Stone Hers' mom. Embarrassing moment: Waaaay to mention.. I turn real red real easy. Game Day Rituals: I'm a little bit ocd. I go over my rosters, check my announcers back for microphone, extra batteries, extra pens/markers cds back up supplies for almost any emergency. Then my outfit top to bottom, inside to out at least 2-3 times. Then stress out that i'm forgetting something until it's bout time. Birthday: Im a hard headed late April Taurus Height: Around 6 foot Weight: 200 + lbs heavier than I look. |
